Cruising
the Waterways of the Great Bear Rain Forest:
The Central Coast
of British
Columbia is the ideal cruising destination. It offers some
of the finest scenery on the west coast. The white sand
beaches of Hakai Luxbalis
Conservatory
(pictured above) are located on the
outer coast. Hakai, as
called
by locals, offers 475 square miles of pristine
shoreline. Here,
marine life
is
abundant. Seals, sea otters, dolphins, orca & humpback whales are
frequently spotted.
Spend the
day exploring the expansive maze of islands, inlets and coves. Spend
the night
tucked into one of the area's numerous picturesque anchorages. Enjoy a
salmon barbecue at
sunset and soak in the magic of being the only ones there..besides
eagles, deer and the occasional wolf.
Next, head inland
to the fjords, estuaries, salmon streams and old growth forests of the
Coast Mountain Range. Fjordlands
Recreation Area lies here. To travel
these waters is a dream-like experience, passing through dramatic,
seemingly endless fjords and cruising by glacier capped mountains that
rise thousands of feet straight up from the water's edge. Motoring is required to navigate
through some
of the areas narrow passages, while the fjords and long inlets provide
exciting sailing opportunities.
Few areas
of the
world can match the wealth of wildlife in the Coast Mountain Rain
Forest. Seals, whales, wolves, grizzly bears, black bears and
eagles
can all be seen - perhaps in just one day!

Namu (Minimum
days required: 4-5)
Whether
you're
on your way to Hakai Provincial Park
or just
sailing
around King Island, Namu is a
great place to stop for provisions
(diesel, ice, water, etc.)
Namu
is the
site of a traditional Heiltsuk
fishing village, which is one of the most ancient
human
settlements of
the northwest coast. In
1893, a cannery was built on this
historic site
and closed in the late 1960's. This historic harbor is now a virtual
ghost town.
Even
with
with a population of four, there is plenty of
friendly hospitality. You can dock overnight for a small charge,
explore the town and even take hot showers. The
dock has
an amazing
community building complete with a huge indoor fire pit and full
kitchen facilities. All with a beautiful view of Namu Harbor.

Roscoe
Inlet (Minimum
days required: 7-8)
Some of the most impressive scenery on the
Central Coast can be found at Roscoe Inlet. The entire inlet is
pristine and loaded with wildlife. Shear rock faces rise thousands of
feet straight up from the waters edge - so close you can reach out and
touch them. Long summer days warm the water in the bay into the upper
70°s F (upper 20°'s C), making swimming off the boat
a refreshing treat. There are several well protected anchorages to
choose from, such as Quartcha Bay, (pictured). Bears and wolves are
often seen here roaming the shores and grassy meadows below a two
thousand foot waterfall. |

While cruising though this channel, be sure to stop at the "ice box" -

summer. Several large waterfalls provide nice lunch stops along the
way. |
